Description

Module description

The module aims to expand the vocabulary, oral skills and written skills of students who have already gained a high level of proficiency and fluency in their chosen language. It is designed to challenge all students at their individual level and provide a framework in which to develop their own strengths, while at the same time give the opportunity to undertake a longer and more in-depth study of a specific topic that relates to the student’s main language.

The module comprises of individual research work on a topic chosen by the student (with guidance), supported by individual supervision and combined with group sessions and tasks aimed at developing language and research skills with a communicative focus.

Topics chosen typically include, but are not limited to, current social or political issues, cultural reviews, historical investigations, or philosophical or academic debates, and students are encouraged to approach their topic selection with as broad an imagination as possible. It is also possible to build on experiences of the year abroad, and/or draw on studies undertaken during that year. As the module is run as one seminar group and includes regular sessions with all students, there are also opportunities to engage with and learn about the topics chosen by other students and practice peer review and reflection, while it also provides opportunity for inter-Nordic linguistic practice. One further strength of the course is also the wide range of material types it encourages students to seek out and make use of, beyond academic texts, thus allowing for a wide range of potential aspects of Nordic society to investigate and making the widest possible use of resources for topical enquiry, while giving students the opportunity to build expertise around an issue or topic that concurs with and develops their own profile and interests.
