Description

This module aims to provide a thorough understanding of the assessment tools and different treatment pathways available to manage obesity and its complications. You will be equipped with knowledge and skills to develop a personalised, multi-disciplinary approach to obesity care and management.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Assess and interpret the anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary data and reference standards to determine nutritional status of individuals with weight problems
  2. Describe the metabolic effects of obesity and the mechanisms of weight reduction
  3. Identify the limitations of the different treatment paths to weight loss
  4. Explain the behavioural change principles underpinning nutritional intake and how these are used in weight management
  5. Justify and interpret advice on how to achieve a lower body weight
  6. Design suitable individualised treatment plans for overweight and obese patients with different needs

This module will keep you up-to-date with the latest evidence on obesity complications, as well as on the dietary, exercise and behavioural approaches to weight management. Some of the topics you will be introduced to include (but not restricted to) clinical assessment in obesity (assess aetiology, complications, treatment options), adherence to treatment on weight management (diet, exercise and changing behaviour), weight management outcomes, Mechanisms of body weight reduction, Diet restriction and intervention, Popular, therapeutic & restrictive diets for diabetes, obesity and cardiometabolic disease, Medical treatments and emerging therapies, metabolic inflammation, Surgical approaches to weight management, Behavioural modification in weight management, ethical and moral considerations and weight stigma and discrimination.
