Description

Practice learning is essential to pre-registration dietetic education with placements integrated throughout the two-year MSc Dietetics pre-registration programme. It provides the students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of their role as a healthcare professional and to build a sense of professional identity.Ìý

Placement 1 is a 10-day (75 hour) placement, which students will complete part-time 3 days a week. ItÌýserves as an introduction to dietetic practice where students will develop their knowledge and skills through a range of simulated learning activities, case studies, shadowing ward rounds and catering provision in clinical settings etc.

Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýOn successful completion of the module students should be able to:

  1. LO1: Applied Knowledge
    Observe and experience professional practice of dietetics in health and care/other settings progressing knowledge required to support development of evidence-based practice on placement.
  2. LO2: ÌýAssessment
    Observe and experience the identification and use of appropriate methods to assess nutritional needs of selected service users (e.g., individuals, groups and populations) to systematically gather information to inform a comprehensive assessment in accordance with the care process (BDA, 2020)
  3. LO3: ÌýDietetic diagnosis
    Observe and experience the formulation and justification of appropriate nutrition and dietetic diagnoses or define a community public health need.
  4. LO4: ÌýCare Planning
    Observe and experience in, developing and implementing an appropriate dietetic care and action plans for achieving dietetic goals.
  5. LO5: ÌýReflection and Review
    Observe and experience effective reflection and review of practice and how this contributes to professional development, service delivery and outcomes for service users.
  6. LO6: ÌýCommunication with Individuals
    Observe and experience effective communication skills and approaches with service users (e.g., individuals, groups and populations), other professionals and support staff and starts to apply these in the placement setting.
  7. LO7: ÌýProfessionalism
    Observe and experience professional behaviour enacted in practice in accordance with HCPC standards (Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, (2016), Standards of Proficiency (2013) and local organisational policies and demonstrates the professionalism expected for student dietitians (Guidance for students on Conduct and Ethics, HCPC, 2016)
