Description

Content: This module is exclusively for MSc Urban Economic development course students. It runs over three terms. The module explores the challenges of promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development in urban areas and their surrounding regions both in developing and developed countries, offering students real-life contexts to examine the experiences of urban economic development and management practices. Through a series of different teaching and practice formats, the module has the overall purpose of equipping students with the knowledge, techniques and skills required on the ground for practitioners.

The first group-based project is called the London project. Students conduct research in response to the research question of their assigned partner organisation. The module culminates in a two-week overseas practice engagement project (often referred to as simply the Fieldtrip) typically undertaken overseas in the field, allowing students to synthesize the lessons of the year in a practical setting.Ìý

Typical Teaching Delivery: The module’s method of delivery is comprised of Units. For term 1, each Unit comprises Asynchronous work (Individual and self-organised group work) and Synchronous sessions with the tutor (a live 3 hour lecture every Friday).

Students deliver 2 practice module reports, the London project (introduced in Unit 5 of Term 1 and report submitted in the first-half of Term 2), and the Fieldtrip which involves either a virtual or overseas fieldwork (as per travel restrictions and ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûPolicy).

Participants are expected to complete the Asynchronous elements of a Unit (reading, individual and group work) before the Synchronous session with tutor. Participants must do the above-the-line reading for all Units (compulsory and necessary for individual and group work and for the Synchronous sessions). The tasks for individual and group work for each Unit are outlined in this module guide.

Module Aims: This module aims to expose students to contrasting practices of urban economic development in economies at different levels of development, to enable them to gain a better understanding of the process of managing local economic development within the urban context. It also endeavours to develop the students’ analytical and evaluative capacity. On completion, the intention is that students will:

  • Have been exposed to contrasting experiences of urban economic development practices in both advanced and less-advanced urban economies;
  • Be able to critically evaluate the effects and impacts of development initiatives;
  • Have acquired a deeper appreciation of the differences in economic development contexts between advanced and less-advanced economies.
